Biochemistry

Prof. Joseph O. Adebayo is an erudite scholar with decades of cognitive and administrative experience. He obtained his B.Sc. (Hons.), M.Sc. and Ph.D degrees in Biochemistry in 1992, 1997 and 2004 respectively from the University of Ilorin, Ilorin, Nigeria. His Ph.D thesis won the second position (in the science category) award of the Nigerian Universities Commission in 2004. He was awarded the TWAS-CNPq postdoctoral fellowship in 2007 and the International Union of Toxicology Risk Assessment Summer School Scholarship in 2010. His areas of specialization are Clinical Biochemistry (with special interest in malaria research) and Biochemical Toxicology. He has many scientific articles published in reputable local and international journals. He is a member of some learned societies, such as South South Initiative for Tropical Disease Research, Nigerian Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Nigerian Society of Experimental Biology, etc. He has attended various scientific conferences both locally and internationally. He is Principal Investigator and member of various research groups and has collaborators both locally and internationally, with whom he has won various grants, especially Tetfund Institution Based Research Grants and Tetfund National Research Fund. He, in conjunction with his collaborators, won the first position award of the individual life sciences research of the Nigerian Universities Research and Development Fair in 2012. He has been an advisor to many B.Sc., M.Sc. and Ph.D. students in Biochemistry. He was a Site supervisor for Community Based Experience and Services (COBES) of the WHO Collaborating Centre, College of Health Sciences from 2004 to 2006. He was the Postgraduate Coordinator of Biochemistry Department from 2012 to 2014. He was the Research Manager for the Faculty of Life Sciences from 2018 – 2019. He was the Head of Biochemistry department from 2021-2024. He is a member of the University Senate. He is happily married and blessed with children.
